A Bexar County deputy sheriff's patrol supervisor in a marked unit was apparently ambushed and killed in a hail of gunfire on the East Side early Saturday.
Authorities at the scene of the shooting at Loop 410 and Rigsby Avenue said the patrol sergeant, that one source said had been a deputy for 25 years, was sprayed by multiple rounds from a semi-automatic weapon and died at the scene shortly after 2:12 a.m.
“We don't have much at this point,” said Chief Deputy Sheriff Manuel Longoria at the scene, where dozens of San Antonio police, sheriff's deputies and investigators combed the area for clues as dawn approached.
Longoria declined to identify the officer until his family was notified.
Longoria said the deputy, responding to a call, was at the highway intersection southbound on Rigsby stopped for a red light.
“He was in the left lane, someone rolls up on his right and just opens fires,” Longoria said. “He was struck multiple times.”
The bullets shattered the passenger side window before striking the officer.
