Philadephia Corrections Officer gunned down

This article is a grim reminder of the dangers we face daily when we don the uniform and prepare to protect and serve. Please let it serve as a reminder to constantly be aware of your surrondings. Although the details of the shooting are not yet known, it potrays the dangers we inherently face.

PHILADELPHIA — Police are questioning a person of interest in connection with the shooting of a Philadelphia corrections officer on Sunday night.

A report by NBC news stated that Lonnie Rowland, 36, was shot multiple times with a 40-caliber handgun at 10:50 p.m. on the doorstep of his home on the 2400 block of W. Elkhart Street.

His grandmother, Gertrude Rowland, was sleeping in the home when she heard gunshots. According to ABC News, Gertrude came upon the scene to find a man in a hooded sweatshirt straddling the victim. The hooded gunman then forced her into a closet, ransacked the home and then escaped.

The wounded corrections officer was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at at 11:07 p.m.

Police said there are no signs of forced entry. Therefore, it is thought that Lonnie may have let the gunman into the home voluntarily.

Rowland was in his prison uniform and preparing for his shift at the time he was killed, the Associated Press reported. He had been a member of the corrections department since 1998. Prison officials said he had worked at the Cambria Community Center minimum security facility for the last 18 months.

David Lee Powell

For those of us who have been around the City of Austin and Travis County for a while, David Lee Powell is a name we are more than familiar with. After being convicted of Capital Murder of Austin Police Officer Ralph Ablanedo, he was brought back to the Travis County Jail on numerous occassions to either be retried or re sentenced. Each time he was sentened to death.

After 32 years on death row, his sentence was finally carried out. While some are saying he turned his life around and did not deserve to be executed, others are elated after a 32 year wait. No matter what side you stand on, his execution is now final. No doubt the debate over the death penalty will continue for years to come.

When given the opportunity to redeem himself after 32 years, Powell chose not to comment, instead he simply starred at the family of his murder victim. One would think if you turned your life around and you were truly remorseful, you would have apologized to the family, in person, that was forced to endure 32 years of torment at your hands, regardless of who you were then or who you are now.

The fact of the matter is, there has never been any doubt David Lee Powell and David Lee Powell alone was responsible for the slaying and taking of a human life. The life of a Public Servant. Each day Ralph suited up to protect and serve the citizens of Austin. In an instance, David's selfish act brought a lifetime of pain and misery to the family and friends of Ralph. So before you say his life should have been spared, one should ask, "Why did David Lee Powell not spare the life of his many victims?" We are all aware, killing him will not bring back Ralph or erase the pain of his many victims however, it will ensure he will never get the opportunity to use drugs and murder again.

While I feel for the family David left behind, the diffenerce is David made a choice to commit Capital Murder knowing the consequences. Ralph's family and friends were not given a choice, they were forced, at the hands of Powell, to endure the consequencs of Powell's actions. We all have to face the consequences of our actions. Under State Law, his consequence was death. The consequences for Ralph's family and friends is a lifetime of pain and agony and thoughts of what could have been.

See the following link for more information:

http://www.statesman.com/news/local/powell...cTrk=RTR_504016
